HBS First Out Meeting of 2026

Saturdays will not be the same for a while for those member of HBS and the many Bonfire Societies in and around Sussex. Saturday 5 September saw the first of many bonfire out meetings albeit a slightly different event. UCKFIELD Bonfire Society made the decision to not have the traditional flaming torches or fireworks at their event following the recent government advice. Obviously this was a big change from the norm however it was fantastic to see that those societies who attended did not let this get in the way of having a fantastic evening. Whilst flaming torches were not used many societies had brought along torches which were lit by bulbs and created a fantastic display along the procession. Hailsham were also there with torches in support of the event and even won an award, Best Banner Carrier! Whilst an unusual start to the season a non the less a great evening was had by all.

  • HBS Social Evenings

HBS Darts Evening @ The Crown Hailsham

HBS Socials Captain, Jo Salmons, organised a fantastic evening event at The Crown Pub in Hailsham on 21 Feb 2026. The night consisted of rounds of darts played by pairs randomly picked from the society members. This was the first night of this type and was a huge success. The outright winners were our Captain of Street Collections, Liz and our very own Chairman, Bob. There were other prizes up for grabs throughout the night and it was well represented by our society members. The society is not all about the bonfire celebrations in October and November, there are many events we get involved in and great get togethers like this one to have a great time!

  • Sussex Bonfire Carol Service

HBS members attended the Sussex Bonfire Society Annual Carol Service in Uckfield, 14 December 2025. The society was well represented with a number of members attending in their Smuggler or Victorian dress. The service was preceded with a colourful procession and then Christmas Carols at the church. Also the new banner for Christmas was revealed, a great addition to our many banners throughout the years and proudly carried by our Captain of Banners, Richard Harris. HBS Juniors banner was carried in by Dylan Lloyd, a long standing junior member and now YouTuber for the society.
